Bajaj Auto has unveiled the world’s first CNG-powered two-wheeler, the Bajaj Freedom 125, setting a new benchmark in the motorcycle industry. Priced starting at ₹95,000 and available up to ₹1.10 lakh (both ex-showroom), the Freedom 125 comes in three variants and seven vibrant colors, including Caribbean Blue, Pewter Grey/Black, Cyber White, Ebony Black/Grey, Racing Red, Cyber White, Pewter Grey/Yellow, and Ebony Black/Red.

Engine and Performance:
The Bajaj Freedom 125 is equipped with a 125cc single-cylinder engine that operates on both petrol and CNG. This dual-fuel engine delivers 9.5 PS of power and 9.7 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 5-speed gearbox. The CNG tank, with a capacity of 2 kg, is smartly positioned under the seat, maintaining the bike’s balance and weight distribution. Additionally, the bike features a conventional 2-liter petrol tank located above the CNG tank, allowing riders to switch seamlessly between fuels at the click of a button.

Variants and Features:
The Freedom 125 is available in three variants: Freedom 125 Drum, Freedom 125 Drum LED, and Freedom 125 Disc LED. The base model comes with drum brakes on both wheels, while the higher-end models feature a front disc brake for enhanced braking performance. The LED headlamp, offered in the Drum LED and Disc LED variants, ensures superior visibility during nighttime rides. The bike also boasts a modern trellis frame and a linked monoshock for improved stability and comfort.

Fuel Efficiency and Cost Savings:
One of the standout features of the Bajaj Freedom 125 is its impressive fuel efficiency. The bike offers a mileage of 67 kmpl on petrol, but in CNG mode, it achieves a remarkable 102 km/kg. This high efficiency translates to significantly lower running costs, with Bajaj claiming that riders can save around ₹15,000 annually on fuel expenses. The combined range on full tanks (CNG and petrol) is an impressive 330 km, making it a cost-effective option for daily commutes.

Environmental Impact:
The Bajaj Freedom 125 is not only economical but also environmentally friendly. It reduces CO2 emissions by 26.7% compared to conventional petrol bikes. Additionally, it emits 85% fewer non-methane hydrocarbons and 43% less nitrogen oxides, contributing to a cleaner environment.

Launch and Availability:
Initially, Bajaj Auto has launched the Freedom 125 in Maharashtra and Gujarat. This strategic rollout will help the company gauge market response and address any technical issues while establishing a robust CNG refueling infrastructure in these states. Based on the success in these regions, Bajaj plans to expand the bike’s availability across India and explore export opportunities in CNG-reliant countries such as Egypt, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Colombia, and Peru.

Market Potential:
Bajaj Auto aims to capture a significant share of the entry-level motorcycle market with the Freedom 125. Currently, the 100cc and 125cc segments account for a large portion of monthly motorcycle sales in India. By offering a bike with dual-fuel capability and exceptional fuel efficiency, Bajaj hopes to replicate its success in the CNG three-wheeler segment, where it holds an 88% market share.

Statements from Bajaj Auto Leadership:
During the launch event in Pune, Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, expressed his optimism about the Freedom 125. He reminisced about the challenges faced during the launch of India’s first CNG three-wheeler 25 years ago and highlighted the advancements in CNG infrastructure since then. “The Freedom 125 offers freedom from petrol imports, harmful emissions, skyrocketing petrol prices, and range anxiety,” he said, calling it a game-changer for the two-wheeler industry.

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, praised Bajaj Auto’s innovation and emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing air pollution and fossil fuel imports. He mentioned ongoing projects to produce bio-CNG from rice-straw and urged Bajaj to consider developing bikes that run on 100% bioethanol.

Future Plans:
Bajaj Auto plans to start with a production capacity of 10,000 units per month and gradually increase it to 40,000 units per month by the end of the financial year. The company is also exploring the potential for more models with flex-fuel technology, combining CNG and petrol, to cater to a broader market.

In summary, the Bajaj Freedom 125 represents a significant leap forward in sustainable transportation, offering an economical, environmentally friendly, and efficient alternative to traditional petrol-powered motorcycles. With its innovative technology and strategic launch, Bajaj Auto is poised to make a substantial impact on the two-wheeler market.
